Facebook is looking for an analytical thinker with experience in policy, law, government, media, and/or journalism (online, print, or broadcast) to join our Content Policy team. The team’s mission is to create and communicate rules for how our products may be used by people and publishers on Facebook and its family of applications. This person will primarily support the News team, with a focus on the experiences of Facebook users in consuming news content on our platform, including our new Facebook News product.
The position will focus on providing policy guidance around the growth and evolution of Facebook News and Facebook’s News Page Index. The position will also provide policy guidance on products that impact the ways in which news content is distributed on News Feed. Candidates must be able to apply complex, evolving frameworks to new and innovative products and initiatives and make difficult decisions under pressure, including time pressure. You will be broadly responsible for helping develop and refine principles and policies for products aimed at the experience of News publishers on our platform and products aimed at facilitating the ability of Facebook users to consume news content.
The ideal candidate will be able to critically analyze and communicate the costs and benefits of refinements to these policies and principles, make recommendations about how to apply the policies to specific products, users, and/or types of content, and have a point of view. Most importantly, the ideal candidate will be able to work collaboratively with the product teams to identify and solve potential problems. You should be passionate about the services we provide, the people that we serve, and the News industry.
Help develop and refine principles and policies related to products designed for News publishers and/or the distribution of News content on Facebook products (with a particular focus on issues like content that Facebook recommends to users).
Review global products, features, and initiatives to provide practical strategies across multiple jurisdiction, understanding unique policy risks and benefits raised by different jurisdiction.
Collaborate with product partners to help build and refine products that meet the goals of the Product and Policy teams.
Build relationships with and understand the perspectives of partners on internal teams, such as Public Policy, Product Management, Communications, Marketing, Media Partnerships, and Legal.
Act as a global escalation point of contact and manage internal communications for news policy issues.
Help articulate policy philosophy, product launches, and product changes to relevant parties, including management, operations, and other internal and external stakeholders.
Work with Facebook's global Public Policy team, as well as external stakeholders, to monitor the global environment for policy issues that impact News and News publishers on our platform.
Bachelor's degree in Policy, Law, Media, Journalism or related field of study.
8 years of relevant work experience in policy, law, media, government, or journalism with an emphasis on platforms and technology, media regulation, and/or news publishing.
Experience with international, multi-jurisdictional issues.
Demonstrates analytical-thinking and problem-solving skills.
Experience working cross-functionally and consensus-building, including managing multi-stakeholder projects.
Demonstrated experience with regularly handling and prioritizing multiple complex projects.
Advanced degree in public policy, law (particularly with experience in free expression/First Amendment or other media-related legal issues), or journalism.
Background in media, media regulation, journalism, or free expression.
Experience working or studying outside of the United States, or focused on international issues from the United States, particularly international issues related to media, technology, or policy.
Understanding of Facebook products and principles.
