CQ is seeking an assistant editor for CQNow, our live news desk. The multifaceted duties include writing the Morning Briefing newsletter, general assignment reporting, digital production and some copy editing.

We are looking for a candidate with a good understanding of policy and the legislative process. The preferred candidate would excel at varied tasks - involving writing, editing and production -- while under deadline pressure amid fast-changing events.


In the role you would be expected to:

Develop and write the next days Morning Briefing, CQs popular 5 a.m. newsletter
Report, when assigned, on Capitol Hill hearings, markups and other events for CQ products
Write and post tweets geared toward CQs policy-focused audience
Process and post government documents related to CQs coverage
Write and/or edit real-time news items that appear on the CQ home page
Regularly start work in the early afternoon, continuing into the late evening, and other hours as needed. Occasional weekend work is involved if Congress is in session

Experience, skills and professional attributes

To succeed in the role you must have:
A bachelors degree in journalism or related field
* At least two years of experience at a daily or digital news organization or similar publication
* A good general knowledge of Congress, policy and the legislative process
* The ability to write in a concise, approachable, neutral way about complicated topics
* The news judgment to determine the next days top anticipated events in Congress
* The ability to research and write original content for Morning Briefing
* The ability to adapt already-published CQ content for the Morning Briefing audience
* A good understanding of Twitter and other social media
To succeed in the role you will be able to demonstrate:

* The ability to code documents with proper metadata
* The ability to work from multiple locations (the office, the Hill, etc.), often in the same day
* The ability to, when necessary, troubleshoot and log technical issues
* The ability to follow in-house and Associated Press style
* The ability to shift quickly between tasks and juggle competing priorities
* The ability to work long hours and meet strict deadlines
