Summary Assists Acquiring Editors in acquiring book and electronic projects for publication. Handles and coordinates various tasks related to manuscripts under review and in production. Conducts preliminary assessment of specific projects through knowledge of market trends and scholarly developments. Solicits prospective authors for manuscripts. Engages expert reviewers to evaluate manuscripts. Contributes to decisions regarding prospective projects. Creates, maintains, and manages database records to track progress of publishing projects in all stages of consideration and production. Summarizes and communicates the nature of publishing projects to relevant parties including authors, outside reviewers, series editors, other publishers in the US and abroad, outside institutions such as foundations, and other departments within IU Press and the University. Handles author relations before and after acceptance of manuscripts. Prepares manuscripts for transmittal to the Editorial, Design, and Production department. Represents the IU Press at academic meetings. Interviews, trains, and supervises student interns. Required Qualifications REQUIRED: Bacheloru2019s degree in humanities, social sciences, or related field and two years of experience in publishing or closely related field. Combinations of related education and experience may be considered. Computer literacy and competency including familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite and database management, preferably FileMaker; facility with using online resources. Ability to effectively communicate and exchange information. Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills. Excellent organizational skills. Ability to multitask effectively. Excellent interpersonal skills, including a demonstrated ability to interact tactfully, courteously, and with discretion; the ability to establish and maintain good working relationships; and the ability to work cooperatively in a team environment. Preferred Qualifications Some experience working with budgets; Knowledge of one foreign language. Working Conditions / Physical Demands May require stooping, bending, and/or lifting boxes up to 40 pounds. Some travel required.
