Overview
The Communications and Digital Media Officer, Girl Up will play an important and significant role on Girl Up’s Communications team, working in close collaboration with the Communications and Digital Media Manager on strategy, messaging, content and partnerships. The Communications and Digital Media Officer will report to the Communications and Digital Media Manager, and work closely with the Co-Executive Directors of Girl Up, as well as across Girl Up’s fundraising and program teams. She/he will also collaborate across the UN Foundation, especially with members of public affairs.
Responsibilities
Develop, lead, and manage storytelling strategy and implementation to capture Girl Up’s impact and global movement;
Support implementation of Girl Up’s communications and digital media strategy across traditional and online media platforms;
Draft, and edit written materials, communications plans, and content as needed for partner, program, and communications teams;
Lead strategy and implementation of communications for key Girl Up partnerships;
Lead press strategy and outreach, working to maintain and expand Girl Up’s press relationship;
Coordinate with multiple team members to help maintain Girl Up’s messaging and editorial calendar;
Manage vendor relationships as needed for communications team;
Draft statements, talking points, blog posts, op-eds, speeches and press releases;
Assist on partner communications management and attend partner meetings and events representing the communications team
Write, edit, and post new web content on GirlUp.org;
Provide support and backup as needed on social media posting and scheduling;
Provide support and backup as needed on email coding, reporting, and segmentation as needed;
Provide support on reporting communications metrics and KPIs;
Create messaging for social media kits and press kits;
Work closely with Communications Associates to coordinate Girl Up Community storytelling priorities;
Keep up-to-date on communications and digital industry standards and trends;
Attend and cover live events as applicable;
Manage communications interns;
Other projects and duties as assigned.
Selection Criteria
Required Qualifications
Minimum 5 years of experience in communications and digital media, in publishing or media outlet, at a PR agency, or NGO setting;
Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, English, Communications, Public Relations, International Relations or related field preferred;
Excellent writing skills — experience writing and editing op-eds, blogs, press releases, and editorial content for a brand, organization, or thought leader;
Experience driving impactful storytelling strategy;
Strong media relations background and experience working with press;
Experience working as part of a partner or client-facing communications team;
Strong skills working in diverse teams and across many types of organizations;
Team-oriented; problem solver; relationship-builder; and strong inter-personal skills;
Ability to multitask in a very fast-paced, often rapidly-changing environment.
Basic proficiency Adobe Suite, Microsoft Office Suite;
Ability to meet regular attendance/tardiness policy;
Sense of humor, creative energy and a great team player.
Ability to work under pressure and handle stress;
Ability to meet UNF's attendance policy.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience maintaining and managing organizational social networking accounts;
Experience writing and editing educational materials and curricula
Proficiency in email marketing platforms (e.g., Convio Luminate Online, EveryAction, Campaign Monitor, Pardot, or similar tools), CRM (Salesforce preferred), and CMS platforms (WordPress);
Experience producing and editing video content;
Familiarity with global humanitarian and gender equality issues and issues affecting girls and women globally.
