A Broadcast Journalist is the key person who collects, verifies and analyzes the information gathered about the daily happenings and broadcasts all this information in various media like radio, television, internet journals and government journals. They can work for advertising agencies, private consulting firms and other broadcast publishers. The job of a Broadcast Journalist also consists of turning the raw data received from the reporters into pictures and motion videos. The Broadcast Journalist initiates and produces a wide choice of news content and current affairs by carrying out detail research. He or she creates scripts for the programs, bulletins, etc. and performs regular editorial work, sticking to various legal and ethical guidelines. A Broadcast Journalist may have to work both indoors and outdoors in a variety of situations.

Responsibilities of the Job
  • Viewing the news scene from variable angles and focusing on the details to give a clear picture to the public
  • Discussing with editors about the works to be published and supervising the stories before they are broadcast
  • Taking shorthand notes or recording information on digital tapes during live scenes
  • Creating stories about current affairs and broadcasting editorials; also giving commentaries to engage public interest and articulate the views of the publication
  • Providing with dedication accurate and impartial news, as slanderous and libelous news can lead to costly lawsuits
  • Participating in initiating and developing ideas to support forward development of future programs and providing briefings for camera crew, reporters and other resource staff
Educational Qualifications to become a broadcast journalist



A bachelor's degree or diploma in broadcast journalism, journalism, mass-communication, English or a related field is a necessary pre-requisite for the job of a broadcast journalist. Candidates having a degree in arts with a post graduation in broadcast journalism tend to have an added advantage. A Broadcast Journalist needs to have a detailed knowledge of subjects like geography, history, economics, politics, media law and social life of the communities and countries where they work. Decisive reviewers should have specialized knowledge and experience in the particular area of their work and they should be able to provide proper evidence to back up their comments. A minimum of 4-6 years of experience is required to become a well-equipped broadcast journalist.

  • Knowledge of methods and procedures in the Health and Safety legislation
  • Ability to handle various kinds of equipment like cameras, recording tapes and other specialized electronic objects
Broadcast Journalists with high experience can become publishing media like papers, television, weekly journals, or move into related occupations such as fiction writing, advertising copy writing, educational writing, technical writing, public relations and media consulting, event organizing, screenwriting or editing.
